What materials are used to make injection molds?

1. High corrosion resistance.

Many resins and additives will erode the cavity surface layer. This type of corrosion can lead to melting and peeling of the metal in the cavity surface layer, poor surface conditions, and poor quality plastic parts. Therefore, it is best to use corrosion-resistant steel, or chrome and cymbal nickel cavity surface layer.

2. Good wear resistance.

The gloss and precision of the surface of the injection molded part is directly related to the wear resistance of the surface of the injection mold cavity. Especially in the glass fiber, inorganic filler and some plastic after adding some plastic, they and plastic solvent together in the runner and cavity flow rapidly, the cavity surface produces a lot of friction. If the material is not wear-resistant, it will soon be damaged, which will ruin the quality of the molded parts.

3. Good dimensional stability during injection molding, should reach the injection mold cavity temperature.

Therefore, injection mold manufacturers recommend choosing tool steel with moderate hardening. Otherwise, the microstructure of the material and the size of the plastic mold will produce changes.

4. Easy to process mold parts are mostly made of metal materials, some of which have complicated structures and shapes.

In order to reduce the production cycle and improve efficiency, the mold material must be easy to process into the shape and accuracy required by the drawing.

5. With good polishing characteristics of light performance, usually need excellent gloss and surface condition, which requires the cavity surface roughness requirements are very small.

So the cavity surface must be polished, ground and other treatments, so the selected steel must not contain rough impurities, pores, etc..

6. The influence of heat treatment is very small.

In order to improve the hardness and wear resistance, it is usually necessary to carry out heat treatment of the injection mold, but this solution will make the specification shift is very small. Therefore, it is better to use machinable pre-hardened steel.
